Umboldi: A Model Community of Resilience and Vision

Umboldi community with Rai Coast MP, Kessy Sawang

Perched on a scenic plateau overlooking Saidor Station and the serene Lagap/Mur Bay, the community of Umboldi embodies the spirit of resilience, self-reliance, and vision. I had the distinct honor of being invited to open a double classroom built by the school and community, launch of five new staff houses, and open the vibrant Kangal Festival on November 11, 2024. Everything about this community resonates deeply with me, and Umboldi serves as a shining example of the kind of industrious and united communities we aspire to cultivate across Rai Coast.

First Impressions of Order and Leadership

From the moment we landed, Umboldi’s sense of order was striking. Despite the school’s sloped terrain, every detail was meticulously organized. People stood in designated areas, demonstrating a clear respect for leadership and authority. What truly stood out was the pivotal role of young men and women who displayed exceptional organizational skills, showcasing the community’s collective discipline and determination.

Building for the Future: Staff Housing

Since the launch of our Basamuk kapa factory in May, Umboldi became the first school in the district to seize the opportunity to address one of our most pressing needs—better staff housing for teachers. With remarkable unity and initiative, the elites of Umboldi, working across Papua New Guinea and abroad, contributed an impressive K11,600. The community cut local timber, constructed frames for five staff houses, and collected roofing iron from Basamuk. Their efforts symbolize a grassroots commitment to education and infrastructure development.

Support from the Rai Coast DDA

Recognizing their efforts, the Rai Coast District Development Authority (RDDA) co-funded the staff housing project with K50,000. This partnership underscores our commitment to empowering communities that take ownership of their development.

Education: The Heart of Umboldi’s Vision

Umboldi Primary School stands as one of the district’s oldest and most esteemed institutions, having nurtured many of Rai Coast’s brightest minds. The younger generation of leaders is resolute in their mission to elevate the school to a Junior High School. Their emphasis on education reflects a deep understanding of its transformative power. I am fully committed to supporting this vision and collaborating with the community to make it a reality.

Infrastructure Progress: Feeder Road Upgrade

To support Umboldi’s growth and accessibility, we have allocated funds for upgrading the feeder road in 2024. Work on this essential project is scheduled to commence next year, ensuring better connectivity for the community.

Celebrating Culture: The Kangal Festival

The Kangal Festival, founded by Titus Dilambe, is a vibrant celebration of Umboldi’s cultural heritage. The Rai Coast DDA presented K10,000 to support the festival and proposed its elevation to a district-wide event. While the decision rests with the festival’s organizers, we see immense potential to expand its reach, celebrating and monetizing Rai Coast’s rich cultural traditions.

Youth Leadership: A Beacon of Hope

The leadership of Umboldi’s youth is nothing short of exemplary. Their pride in their community and heritage was evident in their neat, professional attire and poised demeanor. Leaders like Sam Beda, Councillor Soge Dilambe, and young men such as Steven Ingoti exemplify the energy and vision driving Umboldi forward. Their commitment to education, cultural pride, and hard work underscores the community’s belief that “everything rises and falls on leadership.”

A Personal Highlight

On a personal note, witnessing the opening ceremony officiated by a Messianic pastor and hearing the name “Yeshua” spoken was a profound and moving experience. It was a reminder of the spiritual underpinnings that often inspire and guide resilient communities like Umboldi.

The Umboldi Spirit

Umboldi’s story is one of pride, unity, and determination. This community’s ability to balance cultural heritage with forward-thinking initiatives is truly inspiring. Umboldi is not just a model community for Rai Coast; it’s a testament to what can be achieved when vision, leadership, and collective effort converge. It is also a place renowned for its thriving vanilla production, which plays a significant role in the community’s agricultural identity. Their journey is a powerful call to action for us all to build resilient and self-reliant communities that embrace education and celebrate cultural heritage.
